Clay Vocabulary:
Ceramic the art of making objects with clay to create sculptures or pottery.
Kiln special oven for firing (baking) clay or glass.
Bas-relief Sculpture in which areas project slightly from a flat surface. Is considered 3D.
Decorative Ornamental; beauty over function.
Subtractive technique when material is taken away. ex. clay carved away to design decorations.
Additive technique when material is added. ex. adding wings or noses to a clay project.
Hand Building Techniques: Any time one uses their hands to make something with clay.
These are the 3 most common:
Slab: flat pancakes or sheet of clay. ex walls to a vessel
Coil: long noodles of clay. ex. coiled hair or handle of clay cup
Pinch: clay that is hand molded is pinched. ex. pinch pot.
Wire Tool: used to cut clay
Clay Tools: used to sculpt/mold
Loop Tool: used carve good for subtractive technique
Stylus Tool: poke, wooden pointy stick
Slip and score is used to glue or attach clay. If you do not use slip and score the clay will not stay together.
How hot can a kiln get? 2300 degrees. Your clay is fired at about 1800 degrees as cones melt at different temperatures that turn the kiln off at the perfect time.
Where does clay come from? The ground.
Form is 3D or 3-dimensional has height H (up and down), width W (left to right), & depth D (how deep it is).

ALBRECHT DURER (1471-1528) Famous German ArtistGerman Albrecht Dürer carefully kept sketchbooks and reference drawings and paintings for personal use throughout his career. Dürer’s watercolor sketches of “mountains and river scenery anticipated the art of landscape painting.” He was highly sought after by the church and noblemen for his skills in portraiture and rendering the human form.
